What do the kosher label markings on DariFree and Miss Roben's mixes mean ?

Many organisations certify facilities for kosher status, some common ones are:

The Organized Kashrus Laboratories.
"Star-K" Kosher Certification.
The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations.
Kosher Supervision of America.

There are two parts of a Kosher marking. The first tells which organisation inspected the product.
There will typically either be a "U", "OU", or "K" inside a circle. All imply kosher status.
Markings just outside the circled letter further delineate what the kosher status is.
If you see the letters OU, K, or U circled with NO outside markings it is Parve or Pareve (both spellings imply the same thing) meaning there is no milk or meat ingredient contamination issues with the product.

This is a question that should be addressed by your pediatrician.

Can you assure me that DariFree™ is really casein-free ?

We understand the necessity of a strictly casein-free diet for children with autistic spectrum disorders and other dietary-related health challenges.

We have had three independent food-testing laboratories analyse separate production batch samples of Vance's DariFree™ Milk Alternative. The labs used three different methods to determine if casein was present in the product. Two analyses were run at a detection limit of 100 parts per million (.01 percent), and the third was run at a detection limit of 25 parts per million (.0025 percent).

No casein was detected in the product at these very sensitive levels of testing.

I know DariFree™ contains Titanium Dioxide, but what is it ?

For years Vance's DariFree™ Fat-free Non-dairy Milk Alternative has been recommended by doctors, dietary specialists and other healthcare professionals, hospitals, clinics and experienced parents as the finest milk alternative available to individuals and families dealing with significant food intolerances, allergies and sensitivities.

Recently concerns have been raised regarding titanium dioxide, an ingredient in DariFree. When the product was initially formulated, all ingredients were carefully selected to ensure safety, quality and effective function. With this recent question, we have again contacted suppliers to closely review and evaluate the integrity of the ingredients, and to verify the safety of our product.

Titanium dioxide is not a toxic mineral. It is an inert mineral and should not be confused with titanium, which is a metal that can be detected with a toxicity level test. Food-grade titanium dioxide is commonly used in many consumer products including pharmaceuticals, icing, candy, milk, cheeses, many non-dairy and fat-free foods, toothpaste, sunscreen, soap, shampoo, cosmetics (including products commonly used around the eyes), vitamins, and nutritional supplements.

The FDA does not require manufacturers to list titanium dioxide as an ingredient in food products, allowing it to be listed simply as "colour added." However, our label clearly states: "…coloured with Titanium Dioxide (an inert mineral), …" We included titanium dioxide in the initial formulation because it had been determined to be safe, pure, and effective as a colouring ingredient. As such, it helps give DariFree a creamy, milk-like colour and texture, which we understand to be extremely important to many "picky" children, making DariFree a valuable resource for parents who must ensure that their food-sensitive kids are appropriately supplemented with calcium.

Consumers of DariFree are among the most selective customers in the speciality foods marketplace. We affirm our commitment to provide products that fulfil their needs and expectations of safety and quality. With Original DariFree we hope to continue to satisfy your family's desire for an appealing milk-like product that is free of gluten, casein, lactose, soy, rice, oils, eggs, fat and cholesterol - and great for drinking, cooking and baking, as well as for use on cereal and as a coffee creamer. And new DariFree™ Chocolate makes a delicious beverage, enjoyed hot or cold.

Is DariFree™ corn-free ?

Recently questions have arisen about whether Vance's DariFreeä is corn-free. We are pleased again to address this question to ensure a clear understanding for all, as to the ingredients in Vance's Original DariFree.

No corn products, such as corn syrup solids, are added to Vance's DariFree. Most processed foods contain ingredients derived from corn, such as crystalline fructose, which is used in the making of DariFree. Because the crystalline fructose in DariFree is so highly refined, however, most individuals, including those with high corn sensitivity, can consume DariFree with no problems.

DariFree was carefully developed as a product that could be tolerated by almost everyone. No changes have been made in the DariFree formulation for several years. It is recommended by doctors, dietary specialists and other healthcare professionals, hospitals, clinics and experienced parents as the finest milk alternative available to individuals and families dealing with significant food intolerances, allergies and sensitivities. Even so, it may not be for everyone. Each person's situation warrants individual consideration.

Is the Chocolate Liquor in the Enjoy Life choc chips alcoholic?

Despite its name, chocolate liquor is non-alcoholic. It is a commonly used industry term for an ingredient in our chocolate chips.

The liquor is obtained when the cocoa bean is extracted from the shell and ground into a liquid form (chocolate liquor).

From that point the fat is extracted from the liquor, which is called cocoa butter (non-dairy of course). Once the cocoa butter is removed all that remains is cocoa powder.
